The Superintendent of Gwinnett County Schools Dr. Calvin J. Watts announced a decision Wednesday by the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) to take action to revert their by-laws to a version that was in place six years ago.

As a result, and effective immediately, “A student’s gender is determined by the gender noted on his/her certificate at birth,” said Watts. Georgia State law prohibits discrimination based on gender in athletic programs of local school systems. Each Gwinnett County high school provides seasonal, extracurricular opportunities, under the Georgia High School Association rules, in the areas listed on its website, he added.

“In GCPS, we are committed to serving each and every student in our district, and ensuring that all students, including student-athletes, feel valued, safe, and welcomed. While we do not have answers today to many of the questions our students and families may have, please know our athletic directors and district leaders will work through this change together,” Watts noted

He advised that additional updates would be available from school athletic directors or coaches as more information becomes available.
